How to become a forward deployed engineer

The short answer
To become a forward deployed engineer, start from software, data or solutions engineering and close the gap you have: customer work, production depth or AI systems. Learn what postings ask for most, currently Python, AWS and Azure. Ship one project into an environment you don't control, with a written handoff. Then search the FDE board and prepare for a loop that tests customers as hard as code.
A forward deployed engineer writes production software inside a customer's environment: their cloud, their data, their security rules. The job sits between software engineering and customer work, so nobody walks in fully formed.
This is the path in. Find your starting point, score your gaps, learn what postings ask for, build one project that proves it, then search and interview. If you're still deciding whether you want the role at all, start with what a forward deployed engineer is.
Which backgrounds lead to a forward deployed engineer role?
Software, data and solutions engineering are the shortest routes in, and each leaves one predictable gap. ML engineers come in too, usually needing more integration and customer work.
| Starting point | What you already have | The usual gap | The project that closes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software engineer | Production code, tests, deployment | Customer conversations, and someone else's cloud and security rules | One build for a real user, deployed where you don't control the environment, with a written handoff |
| Data engineer | Pipelines, messy sources, SQL | The LLM and agent layer, and talking to stakeholders | A RAG pipeline over a real document set, written up for a non-technical reader |
| Solutions or sales engineer | Demos, scoping, customer trust | Production coding depth | A deployed application, not a notebook, with tests and monitoring |
| ML engineer | Models, experiments, evaluation | Wiring into enterprise systems, and customer-facing work | An eval-backed feature inside a real system, demoed to a non-engineer |
Not sure which side of the line you want to be on? FDE vs solutions engineer vs ML engineer sets the three roles side by side.
What skills does a forward deployed engineer need?
You need engineering depth and customer judgment at the same time, and the weaker one sets your ceiling.
Andrew Ng's AI Engineering Skills Map appeared in The Batch in August 2026. It names four core skills for AI engineers: building and deploying AI applications, software engineering fundamentals, using coding agents, and shaping the build. That last one covers product sense, business and customer context, and owning a project. It is the part FDE interviews test hardest.
For the FDE job itself, rate yourself 1 to 5 on six skills. Your lowest score is where your first account, or your interview loop, is most likely to stall.
- RAG prototyping: can you stand up retrieval over a document store with no clean schema, against a deadline?
- Data plumbing: can you chain unfamiliar sources, say a warehouse, a legacy database and a REST API, into one pipeline?
- Demo craft: have you demoed on data you'd never seen, with a stakeholder watching, and recovered from a bad output?
- Stakeholder translation: can you turn a VP's vague goal into a scoped spec, then report results in business terms?
- Security reviews: can you answer data residency, access control and SOC 2 questions without escalating?
- Production handoff: could the customer's engineer run your system six months after you leave, without calling you?
What should you learn first to become an FDE?
Learn what the postings ask for most, then work on your lowest score. The FDEBench board held 1,453 roles from 799 companies as of 2 Nov 2026. Its most-tagged skills are Python (33% of roles), AWS (28%), Azure (19%), GCP (14%) and TypeScript (10%).
Notice what tops that list: a language and the clouds you deploy to, ahead of any AI framework. FDEs ship into the customer's cloud, so that comes first.
- A language and a cloud, to production grade. Take the top of that list and deploy something real to one cloud, with auth, logging and a bill you understand.
- The AI layer. Retrieval, agents with tools, evals and the cost arithmetic. The free course, Claude Code for Forward Deployed Engineering, is four recorded sessions on building AI agents with Claude Code.
- The customer layer. Read The Mom Test by Rob Fitzpatrick before your next scoping conversation. It teaches you to ask about what people did, not what they think they'd do.
- The handoff layer. Learn the C4 model for architecture diagrams, write a decision record for a past project, and take a SOC 2 fundamentals course.
What should a forward deployed engineer portfolio show?
It should show one project you owned from scope to handoff. That beats ten repos that never left your laptop. Test each project with three questions.
- Did you talk to a real or simulated user to define the scope?
- Did you deploy into an environment you didn't control?
- Did you write down how a non-engineer would use it and how an engineer would maintain it?
Write the project up like an engagement: the ask, the number you agreed on, what you built, what broke, and the handoff. Then record a five-minute walkthrough for a non-engineer. That narration is exactly what the customer rounds test.
Where do you find forward deployed engineer jobs?
Search by what the role does, not only by its title. FDE-shaped work also gets posted as implementation engineer, customer engineer, embedded engineer and solutions roles.
The FDEBench job board sorts cleaned listings into families, so you don't have to guess titles. Start with Core FDE roles. If you're early in your career, filter for Early Career roles. 56% of listings are in the US, 18% in Europe and 7% in India. Google, Databricks and Salesforce post the most.
Pay is posted on 46% of listings. Of the 462 US listings with a USD range, the median midpoint is $175k at mid level and $208k at senior. The FDE salary guide breaks it down by level.
How do you pass the forward deployed engineer interview?
Prepare the customer rounds as hard as the technical ones. Expect a loop that mixes stakeholder questions, debugging or building, AI system design and a final pitch with a proof of concept. The FDE interview, round by round gives a framework for each.
Then practice on the question bank: 159 questions, 22 of them with a full scoring rubric. Two good first reps are the multi-tenant RAG leak for the technical side and the stakeholder who thinks the model connects to the internet for the customer side.
If you'd rather do this with a cohort, the live bootcamp on Maven runs six weeks: four projects built end to end, how to land the role and pass the interview, and a Demo Day.
Practice these questions
From the FDEBench bank. Each opens its own page, with the full rubric where it has one.
- 11A stakeholder believes the model ‘connects to the internet’ to answer questions with fresh information. Correct the picture and describe the actual data flow. (opens in a new tab)
- 12A multi-tenant RAG assistant is returning documents from other customers’ accounts. Diagnose the design flaw and tell me how you would fix it. (opens in a new tab)
- 1An agent has access to several hundred tools. Their definitions consume most of the context window before the user’s request is even read. Design a fix. (opens in a new tab)
- 16How would you design a prompt caching system for 1 billion daily LLM API calls while optimizing for cost and latency? (opens in a new tab)
Questions people ask
Can you become a forward deployed engineer straight out of college?
Yes, but plan for fewer openings. Of the 462 US listings on the FDEBench board that post pay, 25 are entry level, against 243 senior. Use the Early Career filter, and lean on a portfolio project with a real user, since you won't have customer stories yet.
Do you need AI experience to become an FDE?
You need working knowledge of retrieval, agents and evals, but the board's most-tagged skills are Python, AWS and Azure. Strong engineering plus one shipped AI project is a credible start. The postings lead with shipping skills, not model training.
What is the difference between an FDE and a solutions engineer?
An FDE writes and ships production code inside the customer's environment and owns it until handoff. A solutions engineer mostly scopes, demos and advises, often before the sale. Both work with customers. The difference is where the code lands and who owns it.
What should an FDE learn first?
Start with the skills postings ask for most. On the FDEBench board, Python is tagged on 33% of roles. Then pick the skill you scored lowest on in the self-assessment above, and build one project that exercises it.
