How much do forward deployed engineers make?

The short answer

Forward deployed engineer roles in the US post a median of $175k at mid level and $208k at senior level, going by the midpoints of posted pay ranges on the FDEBench board. Entry-level roles post $140k and staff-level roles $216k. The figures come from 462 US listings with a USD range, gathered since May 2026.

You can check forward deployed engineer pay against real listings. On the FDEBench board, 46% of roles post a pay range, and this page is built from those ranges. Every figure below is filled in from the board each week. These were last filled on 2 Nov 2026.

The short version: pay climbs from entry to senior level, the US holds the largest share of roles, and the list of hirers is long. The detail, and how far to trust each number, follows.

How much do forward deployed engineers make at each level?

The median posted midpoint for a US forward deployed engineer role is $140k at entry level, $175k at mid level and $208k at senior level. Staff-level roles sit at $216k and manager-level roles at $217k.

LevelMedian of posted midpointsUS listings behind it
Entry$140k25
Mid$175k143
Senior$208k243
Staff+$216k33
Manager+$217k18

Read the last column before the middle one. A median from a few hundred listings holds steady from week to week. A median from a couple of dozen can move by thousands of dollars when a handful of new listings arrive.

Staff+ covers listings marked staff, principal or lead. Manager+ covers managers, directors and heads of FDE teams. Those two levels mix very different jobs, so treat their medians as rough.

A median also hides the spread inside a level. Filter the board to US roles that show pay and you'll see senior ranges that don't overlap at all. The posting tells you more than the level does.

How is FDE pay calculated here?

We take the midpoint of each posted range, group the listings by level, and report the median of each group. Step by step:

  1. Keep US listings that post a range in US dollars and give a clear level. That leaves 462 listings.
  2. Take the midpoint of each range. A listing at $150k to $200k counts as $175k. A single posted figure counts as itself.
  3. Group by level and take the median, the middle value, so one very high range can't drag the result.
  4. Drop any level with fewer than five listings.

Four limits are worth keeping in mind. The listings were gathered since May 2026, so this is the market over months, not roles open today. A posted range is what the employer advertises, not what anyone signed. Only 46% of listings post pay at all, and the rest may pay more or less. And the medians are US only.

How do these figures compare with other FDE salary sources?

Other sources measure something different, so their numbers won't match ours. Plank's census of live FDE postings, updated 30 Oct 2026, gives a median posted base midpoint of $203K across the 397 postings that disclose pay. Plank notes that its figures are posted base pay, and that equity and bonus are almost never posted.

That's a snapshot of one day's open postings, with every level pooled into one number. The FDEBench figures cover listings gathered since May 2026, split by level. A pooled median lands wherever the mix of levels puts it. It can't tell you what a mid-level offer should look like, which is usually what you want to know.

Where are forward deployed engineer jobs?

The US has the largest share of forward deployed engineer jobs: 56% of the board's roles, or 819 listings. Europe has 18% (258), India 7% (104), and 19% (272) are elsewhere, including Canada, Latin America, the Middle East and Australia.

Browse by region: US, Europe, India or the rest of the world. The pay medians above leave out every non-US listing. Ranges in euros, pounds, rupees and Canadian dollars sit in different tax systems, and one blended number would mislead.

Who is hiring the most forward deployed engineers?

Google posts the most FDE roles on the board, with 68 listings, followed by Databricks (46) and Salesforce (26). Behind them the list is long. The board's 1,453 roles come from 799 companies, so the typical hirer has posted only one or two.

That matters for your search. Don't build it around three famous names. Search for your own stack instead, for example roles that mention Python, and check what each posting actually asks you to do. How to read an FDE job posting covers the signals that separate engineering roles from pre-sales ones under the same title.

What skills do forward deployed engineer jobs ask for?

Python is the skill FDE postings ask for most, tagged on 33% of roles. The rest of the top five:

  • AWS: 28% of roles
  • Azure: 19%
  • GCP: 14%
  • TypeScript: 10%

Each role carries up to three tags. Read the list as the environments you'll deploy into. An FDE rarely chooses the customer's cloud. You meet the customer where they are, so be ready to work in whichever one they run.

How do you get hired at the top of the FDE pay range?

Your level sets your pay band, and the interview loop sets your level. So the highest-value prep is for the rounds where you show you can own a system end to end.

In system design, that means walking a request from start to finish and naming what breaks first. A good rubric question to start with is the request path for a conversational AI product, which asks "which parts genuinely need exotic infrastructure". Another is replacing 20-second polling for 50 million devices.

Named-company questions help too. Google has posted the most roles on the board (68 since May), and the prep bank has a unified query engine question that Alexey Grigorev’s guide links to Google. Salesforce has one on architecting an AI agent system.

Then the customer round. The prep page's advice for engineers is to expect the customer side to be tested hardest. Start with the stakeholder who thinks the model ‘connects to the internet’. The round-by-round guide is in the forward deployed engineer interview, and every question is on the prep page, filtered here to general design. If you're still deciding whether the role suits you, start with what a forward deployed engineer is.

Questions people ask

Do posted FDE pay ranges include equity?

Usually not. US pay ranges in job postings generally cover base salary, so equity, bonuses and sign-on pay sit on top. Ask for the full package at the offer stage and compare offers on total pay, not the posted band.

Why does the board only report US pay?

Because a median only means something in one currency and one market. European, Indian and other listings are on the board and many post pay, but their ranges aren't in the medians. Use the region filter to compare those listings directly.

How often are the FDE salary figures updated?

Every week. The board is refreshed weekly and every figure on this page is filled in from it. The current figures were filled on 2 Nov 2026.

How many FDE job listings show salary?

46% of all listings on the board show pay in some form. Of those, 462 are US listings with a USD range and a clear level, the set behind the medians. The pay filter shows only listings that post a figure.
